Flat surfaces attract clutter - and clutter attracts MORE clutter. This is just a scientific fact (ahem, don’t fact check me..)
However, you CAN use a clutter magnet to your advantage. Select a spot that is easy to clear clutter from - I use the end of my kitchen island. It’s a central location, quick access to bathroom, bedrooms, kitchen and living room. I have placed a fruit bowl on the counter - this is my “magnet.” It acts as a visual clue to let others know “woah, okay so it’s safe to put something here.”
Now, and this is crucial, add a visual BOUNDRY to this zone. Don’t let it become mayhem. I use a cutting board - and my family is well aware that the cutting board must be clear at all times to be able to quickly cut up apple slices, a quesadilla or any other snack that our kids need RIGHT NOW BECAUSE THEY’RE SOOO HUNGRY.
If you’re not sure what to use, you can even just use a strip of tape!
The clutter magnet now has a zone around it. Clutter can accumulate there, but it must be cleared up once the zone is full. And ideally it gets emptied daily. I have even started using a bin within the clutter zone to just carry around and redistribute the items daily.
And that my friends, is how you use a clutter magnet.
