We’re in soft-launch phase - weekly articles and the activity and accountability group will be starting July 29th!
I grew up watching my mom expertly manage a household of five kids with incredible efficiency – a skill I absorbed without realizing its future impact. Fast forward through a career in research labs, and I was formally introduced to LEAN process improvement and the 5S organization system. The impact was transformative. We had a LEAN consultant guide us, and I later became one of the team members trained to implement 5S, revolutionizing our workspace for peak efficiency. For years, I’ve applied these principles in professional settings, delivering significant savings in time and resources.
Then came the lightbulb moment: “If 5S can make my workplace safer and more efficient, why not use these same techniques at home?” I began to adapt these powerful methodologies for the home environment, creating what I now call Sorted State.
You’ve likely seen the beautifully organized pantries and minimalist homes online. While inspiring, Sorted State offers something more profound. It’s not about achieving a magazine-cover look; it’s about giving you back the one thing money can’t buy: time. Time for your family, for your passions, for whatever truly matters to you. Imagine gaining an extra hour (or more!) each week simply because your home runs more smoothly. That’s not a fantasy; it's the power of an efficient system.
How much time do you spend looking for things?
The average person spends up to 16 minutes per day looking for “something”!
Our Mission is simple: To help you unlock your full potential by creating a home environment free from clutter and inefficiency, enabling greater clarity, focus, and time for what truly matters. Sorted State guides you through transformative home organization, blending structured change management with efficiency-focused strategies to create sustainable systems that maximize productivity and simplify daily life.
So, how do we do this? One way: we use the 5S framework - Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain.
Let me give you a quick example – my spice rack used to be a chaotic jumble. Applying 5S, I first Sorted everything, pulling out all the spices. I was ruthless! Anything expired, rarely used, or bought for that one recipe I never made again? Gone. It was shocking how much I didn’t actually need.
Next, I Set in Order what remained. The spices I use daily went to the front, easily accessible. Those used less frequently found a logical home nearby. No more frantic searching mid-recipe! Then came Shine – a good wipe-down of the shelf, which, let’s be honest, had seen better days and a bit of grease buildup.
To Standardize this new setup, I considered labels and even defining a "fill line" on jars as a visual cue for when to restock – making it easy for anyone to know what’s what and what’s needed. Finally, Sustain means I have a quick weekly check-in. When I refill my salt and oil, I glance at the spices, wipe any spills, and ensure everything is still working. It takes seconds, but it keeps the chaos at bay. This simple process transformed a minor daily frustration into a streamlined, almost invisible part of my kitchen routine.
At Sorted State, we’ll publish weekly articles and notes exploring these concepts.
But if you’re ready to dive deeper and truly transform your space, our paid subscription offers:
Weekly Actionable Challenges: Practical, guided exercises (like the spice rack deep-dive, but for all areas of your home!) to implement change step-by-step.
